Hair grows in three distinct cycles. The first cycle is the Anagen phase, when the hair is attached to the hair follicle and actively growing. In the Catagen phase, the second phase, the hair becomes “dormant”. During this phase, the hair separates from the follicle where it stays until a new hair has entered the Anagen phase. During the Telogen phase, the final phase, the new hair pushes the older hair up the hair shaft until it is shed.

The growth cycle of hair differs in different parts of the body. Typically, hair that is able to grow to longer length remains in the Anagen phase longer than hair that remains short.

Lasers work by emitting a specific wavelength of light that passes through the skin and is preferentially absorbed by its target which in this case is the hair. This light energy is transformed into heat energy upon reaching its target. In laser hair removal, this heat energy travels down the shaft of the hair to the follicle, destroying it and its ability to re-grow hair. It is only during the Anagen phase, when the hair is attached to the follicle, that the hair will be adequately treated. Once the hair follicle is destroyed it will no longer produce hair; however, hair is influenced by hormones and any change in hormones may cause other hair to darken and become thicker. Therefore, maintenance treatments may be necessary in the future. In any one area there will be hair growing in all three growth phases. Because the laser energy is specific to pigment, thicker darker hair is the easiest to treat. Lighter colored hair (blonde, red and grey) has little pigment present and is very difficult to treat, if it can be treated at all.

Almost any area of the body can be treated. The most common areas treated tend to be on the face, but the back, chest, neck, under arms, bikini area, arms and legs can also be treated. Really, the only area that should not be treated is around the eyes, and this is not an absolute.

During the treatment, the laser will be firmly placed against the skin in the area to be treated. At this time there will be a cold sensation as the laser cools the skin to protect it. When the laser is fired there may be a slight stinging or snapping sensation as the hair “picks up” and transmits the energy to the hair follicle. It is important to shave the area a day or two before that treatment to make sure there is 1-2 mm of hair above the skin. Any more and there may not be enough energy transmitted to the hair follicle to destroy it. Multiple treatments will be necessary because the hair follicle can only be treated in the Anagen phase (when the hair is attached to the follicle) and hair in all three growth phases will be present in any one area. On average 4 to 6 treatments are usually required to achieve significant reduction in hair. Sometimes more may be necessary depending upon one’s skin type, color and coarseness of the hair being treated. Treatments are typically done every 6 to 12 weeks depending upon the area being treated.

Laser hair removal has the benefit of being quick, safe and effective. It is unusual to develop complications from this treatment. There have been reports of burns, blistering and scar formation. There is also a rare risk of having pigment changes (either darkening or lightening of the skin). You are able to return to normal activity after a treatment, but it is very important to wear SPF 20 or higher. Your skin may be red and a little bumpy for up to a few days after the treatment so you should plan your social/work schedule accordingly.
